CSE is Canada's National Cryptologic Agency. Our mandate is to:

Position Requirements

Educational Requirements:

You must be registered in a recognized post-secondary program in a field relevant to the position for example, but not limited to, business administration, library sciences, public administration, ethics, communications or social sciences. French considered an asset for any of these position openings.

Salary range:
Student salaries are set by CSE and are based on students’ academic level and previously completed work terms.  Rates are as follows: College (from $573.38 to $701.63), undergraduate (from $642.00 - $766.13) and post-graduate ($754.13 to $892.88) per week.

Security Requirements:

You must be a Canadian Citizen and eligible for a Top Secret security clearance.

The security screening process involves a security interview, a polygraph test, a psychological assessment, and a background investigation covering a minimum of your last 10 years history, including credit and financial verifications.

Ongoing substance abuse is a factor to be assessed as part of your screening process.

CSE is a government agency located in the Ottawa region. Relocation assistance will be provided to students studying at an accredited academic institution located outside the National Capital Region.

  1. Administrative Support:

Great administrative knowledge including but not limited to: planning and organizing, flexibility, initiative, oral communication and listening, teamwork, and professional. Administrative support works with:

  • Providing executive and administrative support services to senior management including the management of an agenda, managing daily flow of information, and planning/coordinating logistical aspects for meetings.
  • Experience reviewing, formatting and tracking documents such as memoranda, ‎briefing notes, or official correspondence.
  • Experience in dealing with sensitive and confidential issues and liaising with senior management
  • Experience in effectively managing calendars and establishing priorities.
  • Recent and significant experience using computer software for word processing, spreadsheets and email such as: MS Outlook, Excel, Word and Power Point.
  1. Audit and Evaluation

If you have strong research, analysis and communication skills, and work well in a team environment, we invite you to apply for this student position in the areas of Audit, Evaluation and Ethics. While the exact duties depend upon specific priorities during the work term, the student would contribute to CSE’s efforts by:

  • Conducting research (both internal and external to CSE) in support of internal audits, evaluations internal disclosures and/or other initiatives
  • Assisting with interviews, data collection and data analysis in support of audits and evaluations
  • Drafting, formatting and editing working papers, formal reports and presentations; and
  • Assisting with the development and/or delivery or training in support of other initiatives.
  1. Communications

Under the direction of the Unit Head, you will have the opportunity to participate in the development and implementation of internal/external communications plans, communications products and evaluation tools, and media monitoring activities all of which will help the organization meet its goals. Some examples include:

  • Research, write and edit newsletter articles
  • Provide support with regards to the implementation and promotion of the History Program
  • Review existing communications tools and make recommendations to enhance client satisfaction
  • Take part in the evaluation of communications products
  • Assist communications officers in the implementation of communications campaigns
  • Develop communications plans
  • Provide media monitoring support
  1. Events and Training Coordinator

An Events and Training Coordinator would:

  • Coordinate logistics for the delivery of such activities as courses, events, visits, meetings and/or conferences;
  • Produce and prepare training material and documentation related to the provision of learning activities and conference, visit and event initiatives; and
  • Maintain and update databases.
  1. Finance

CSE is looking for people to support our business management group by assisting with financial management, resource tracking, planning, financial operations and accounting practices.

CSE is looking for students who have the following skills:

  • Knowledge of accounting, financial planning and analysis, or financial systems;
  • Strong analytical ability (analysis of business requirements or financial information)
  1. Human Resources

CSE is seeking students to assist the Human Resources Group in support of the different disciples such as Staffing and Recruitment, Labour Relations, Classification.Here is a list of some of the activities to be performed within the various teams:

1. Staffing and Recruitment

  • Provide advice, guidance and support to hiring managers in identifying current and future staffing needs
  • Ensure that methods utilized to staff positions are based on HR principles such as fairness, equity and transparency
  • Develop HR tools and procedures to ensure an efficient HR service delivery to clients
  • Research innovative ways to recruit resources

2. Classification

  • Provide classification advice and information to clients and participate in project teams and work groups (e.g. drafting of model descriptions)
  • Research and analyze human resources policy and service delivery issues, maintain statistics and related reports
  • Contribute to the development of training materials and coordinates and assists in the presentation of information and training sessions

3. Learning and Development

  • Contribute to the planning of activities and programs for learning and career development
  • Assist in the coordination of learning activities
  • Conduct research and analysis related to learning and career development (could include analyzing data, consulting with clients and partners, preparing documentation etc…)

4. Labour Relations and Negotiations

  • Provide basic advice, guidance and recommendation to CSE managers and supervisor on the interpretation of the collective agreement
  • Conduct research and analysis related to labour relations issues (analyzing data, jurisprudence, statistic, consulting with clients and partners, preparing documentation etc…)
  • Provide administrative support related to Labour Relations (exclusion, leave without pay process, essential services).

5. Human Resources Information Systems

Student needed to work in Human Resources (HR) in the area of Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), mainly PeopleSoft (PS).HR is currently using Oracle’s PeopleSoft HR Management System which is the official system of record for human resources information. In the near future, CSE (as the whole Government of Canada) is preparing to move to a new version.The candidate must like to work with systems/technology and must want to learn PeopleSoft.

  1. Procurement and Supply Chain Management

CSE is looking for students to support our provision of procurement and contract management services, which encompasses various areas at CSE. The Contracting and Procurement and IT Procurement teams at CSE are looking for students to assist, maintain and support client requests with its main categories of activities being;

  • Procurement, client engagement, interpret policies and guidelines in order to provide advice and guidance to clients, build and strengthen partnerships, and support the management team.
  • Liaison and Coordination role directly supporting procurement officers to prepare files, acknowledge the information for seamless procurement processes, facilitate and help prepare acquisition documents.
  • Remain current with regards to contracting and procurement regulations, central agency policies, and overall government procedures regarding contracts.
  • Knowledge to apply fundamental concepts, principals and skills within supply management in a public service business setting
  • Strong analytical ability (analyze and propose solutions in a variety of situations)
  • Ability to provide strategic support for acquisition and material
  • Knowledge of accounting, and financial systems is an asset
  • Knowledge in policy in the GoC setting is an asset
  1. Graphic Designer

The Corporate Services Group at CSE is looking for students with graphic design skills to assist with the development and implementation of a new layout to our internal website. The main duties are described below:

  • Review and recommend improvements to the appearance, layout, and visual flow of the Corporate Services intranet, including strategies to ensure visual consistency across the site.
  • Through discussion with the various parts of Corporate Services, create graphics that represent them and their services.
  • Integrate any new visuals for the website with the Corporate Services' internal "brand".
  • Sit as a member of the Corporate Services Web Working Group to provide input based on your graphics expertise.
  • HTML and XML coding.

Note: Familiarity with the Government of Canada’s “Common Look and Feel” guidelines would be an asset.

  1. Multimedia and Web Design

The Communications Group at CSE is looking for someone to assist with the development and implementation of strategies, tools and materials that will help to effectively communicate services, activities and projects to our internal and external clients. Although many tasks are outlined below, the student would only be required to work in their area of study.

  • Assist clients with the development and coordination of various promotional pieces for their awareness and education campaigns
  • Conceptualize and produce a variety of communications products including, brochures, posters, newsletters and information sheets. Capture elements such as titles, text, graphics, and colour harmonization.
  • Digitize images using peripherals and transform them using retouching systems, graphic palettes or other specialized software
  • Coordinate with the Photographer on the requirements of a particular assignment. Determine picture composition and lighting, make technical adjustments, and photograph the subject
  • Familiarity with the Government of Canada’s “Federal Identity Program” would be an asset
  • Update and maintain Communications Group web site (intranet) using the principals of creativity and ease-of-navigation
  • Review and recommend improvements to the site architecture and source, select and organize information for best appearance, layout and flow

Note: Familiarity with the Government of Canada’s “Common Look and Feel” guidelines would be an asset.

  1. Translation
  • Offer translation (English to French) and proof-reading services (English and French) in several fields including administration, computer science, telecommunications and security
  • Offer linguistic and terminology services to CSE clients
  • Offer localization services to translate Web pages; and
  • Work with various commercial (ex. MultiTrans) and in-house software

CSE is looking for students who have the following skills:

  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Client service oriented; and
  • Ability to analyze information and reference material in a translation context
