Minister’s Statement: Tabling of the CSE Commissioner’s 2016-2017 Annual Report
Today, the 2016-2017 Annual Report of the Communications Security Establishment Commissioner, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Plouffe was tabled in the House of Commons. The Commissioner’s Annual Report is a valuable means by which CSE remains accountable to me, to Parliament and to all Canadians.
In 2016-2017, the Commissioner found that all of the CSE activities reviewed complied with the law. The Commissioner made five recommendations to further promote compliance with the law and to strengthen privacy protections. All five of these recommendations have been accepted by me and by CSE.
The CSE Commissioner is a fully independent review body who reviews activities undertaken by CSE. The Commissioner independently determines which activities his staff will review in any given year. The Commissioner must also review activities carried out by CSE under a Ministerial Authorization.
I would like to thank Commissioner Plouffe and his staff for their diligent work in reviewing the vital work of CSE and ensuring that CSE remains accountable to Canadians.
