The VMwareŽ ESX Server 3.0.2 and VirtualCenter 2.0.2, from VMwareŽ, Incorporated, hereafter referred to as VMwareŽ ESX Server and VirtualCenter, was the subject of a Common Criteria evaluation performed by the Common Criteria Evaluation Facility at EWA-Canada, Ltd., Ottawa, Canada. The evaluation was completed in May 2008.
The evaluation of VMwareŽ ESX Server and VirtualCenter determined that this Information Technology (IT) product can be trusted, at an assurance level of EAL 4 augmented with ALC_FLR.1, to conform to the requirements of the associated security target.
VMwareŽ ESX Server is the foundation for dynamic, self-optimizing IT infrastructure. ESX Server is a virtualization layer that abstracts processor, memory, storage and networking resources into multiple virtual machines. ESX Server allows IT organizations to increase hardware utilization and decrease capital and operating cost by sharing hardware resources across a large number of virtual machines that run side-by-side on the same server.
VMwareŽ VirtualCenter delivers centralized management, operational automation, resource optimization and high availability to IT environments providing the data center with increased levels of responsiveness, serviceability, efficiency and reliability.
The scope of this evaluation is defined by the security target, which identifies assumptions made during the evaluation, the intended environment for VMwareŽ ESX Server and VirtualCenter, the IT security requirements to be met, and the level of confidence (evaluation assurance level) to which it is asserted that VMwareŽ ESX Server and VirtualCenter satisfies its IT security requirements.
Consumers are advised to carefully review the certification report to gain an understanding of the security functionality, the evaluated configuration, and the intended operating environment for VMwareŽ ESX Server and VirtualCenter.
