The Sun Microsystems, Inc. SolarisTM 9 Release 08/03 operating system was the subject of a Common Criteria evaluation performed by the Common Criteria Evaluation Facility at CGI Information Systems & Management Consultants Inc., Ottawa, Canada. The evaluation was completed on 25 January, 2005.
The evaluation of the SolarisTM 9 Release 08/03 operating system determined that this Information Technology (IT) product can be trusted, to an assurance level of EAL 4 augmented with ALC_FLR.3, to conform to the requirements of the associated security target.
Solaris is a highly-configurable UNIX-based operating system which was originally developed to meet the requirements of the C2 class of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria (TCSEC), including the use of Access Control Lists. These broad requirements are described for the Common Criteria scheme in [CAPP], the Controlled Access Protection Profile and in [RBPP], the Role Based Access Control Protection Profile.
The target of evaluation is an operating system product running on:
Workstations
- Platform 1: UltraSPARC III, UltraSPARCIIIi or UltraSPARCIIi
Servers
- Platform 2: SunFire V880, UltraSPARC III
- Platform 3: The Enterprise 15K: up to 106 UltraSPARC III
- Platform 4: The SunFire mid-frame family including the 3800, 4800, 4810 and the 6800 range of servers.
Various configurations of these platforms are possible and the evaluation scope includes all possible combinations/permutations through the testing of appropriate configurations.
SolarisTM 9 Release 08/03 operating system is compliant to the CAPP (Controlled Access Protection Profile), version 1.d dated 8 October 1999, and the RBPP (Role Based Access Control Protection Profile), version 1.0 dated 30 July 1998.
The scope of this evaluation is defined by the security target, which identifies assumptions made during the evaluation, the intended environment for the SolarisSolarisTM 9 Release 08/03 operating system, the IT security requirements to be met, and the level of confidence (evaluation assurance level) to which it is asserted that the SolarisSolarisTM 9 Release 08/03 operating system satisfies its IT security requirements. Consumers are advised to verify that their operating environment is consistent with the security target.
