The Nortel Networks Alteon Switched Firewall Version 2.0.3 with Hotfix 315/NG_FP3_HFA_315 was the subject of a Common Criteria evaluation performed by the Common Criteria Evaluation Facility at EWA-Canada, located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The evaluation was completed in August 2005.

The evaluation of the Alteon Switched Firewall Version 2.0.3 determined that this Information Technology (IT) product can be trusted, to an assurance level of EAL 4, to conform to the requirements of the associated security target.

The Alteon Switched Firewall Version 2.0.3 is a high-performance firewall system for network security. The system uses a versatile, multi-component approach to deliver accelerated firewall processing power. A basic system is composed of a Switched Firewall Director (SFD) and a Switched Firewall Accelerator (SFA). The SFD, which is comprised of the Firewall Operating System and the Check Point FireWall-1 FP3, handles firewall policies and inspects network traffic. The SFA offloads the processing of secured traffic and speeds up firewall performance. The Alteon Switched Firewall Version 2.0.3 is designed to be installed and operated in an environment that is configured and controlled in accordance with the administrator guidance that is supplied with the product.

The evaluated configuration consists of:

an Alteon Switched Firewall (ASF) composed of a single SFD connected to a single SFA in accordance with the instructions provided in the User Guidance, Release Notes, and Common Criteria Installation Guide.
a connection to a trusted network that hosts a compatible Check Point VPN-1/FireWall-1 NG FP3 Management Server and Check Point VPN-1/FireWall-1 NG FP3 Management GUI.
physical connections to trusted and untrusted networks established via the remaining unallocated ports on the SFA, configured in accordance with the instructions provided in User Guide and Release Notes.
if the Firewall Security Policy identifies the use of these; external directory, authentication or content checking services, either located upon a locally accessed trusted network or accessed via VPN connection to a trusted network.

The scope of this evaluation is defined by the security target, which identifies assumptions made during the evaluation, the intended environment for the Alteon Switched Firewall Version 2.0.3, the IT security requirements to be met, and the level of confidence (evaluation assurance level) to which it is asserted that the Alteon Switched Firewall Version 2.0.3 satisfies its IT security requirements.
